form of a bladder or egg; it is two or three feet in height, and of corresponding
breadth; it has an opening at the top for the reception of an alembic corresponding
to its capacity, for the alembic must so exactly fit the orifice of the
vessel as to completely close it up, preventing any escape of air. There
must be a cover on the top, and from the said cover a tube must project
to the height of two or three feet, over which there must be another covering
in connection with an ahenum containing cold water, whereby the spirits
in the alembic may be elevated, congealed, and condensed. From this cover
there must be another tube carried to send down the condensed vapours into
a vessel beneath. The use of this bladder in operations upon vegetable
substances is by no means to be neglected.
